Carisbrooke - ISLE OF WIGHT
What's around Carisbrooke?
Carisbrooke is a village in the central part of the Isle of Wight, a mere one and a half miles south west of the county town of Newport. With a medieval parish church established by French monks in the 12th century, the church is striking and one of the dominant features in the village, with a 14th century tower overlooking the incredible Carisbrooke Castle, the main draw to this village.
Carisbrooke has an interesting and rich history, as it was the Isle of Wight’s capital for centuries, and was home to prolific Scottish writer Alexander Ross in the 17th century, who was the vicar of the church in the village. Currently, the township has two lovely pubs, a high street with plenty of shops, a café and an Italian restaurant, so if staying in a cottage here or coming to view the imposing Carisbrooke Castle, there are plenty of others things to do.
Places to visit near Carisbrooke
One of the most popular sights on the Isle of Wight is the motte-and-bailey Carisbrooke Castle, which was built in the 12th century. The castle is famous for being the fortress in which King Charles I was imprisoned in the months leading up to his trial, and makes a great day out for you, your partner and the children, as it is an educational and historical structure. Visitors can take walks around the fortifications to get a birds-eye view from the castle of the grounds below, or take a nice relaxing stroll through the Princess Beatrice Garden, a gorgeous Edwardian-style garden. There are also opportunities to dress up as a soldier, try on the armour and learn how to fire cannons. One of the most interesting parts of Carisbrooke Castle is the 16th century tread wheel which used to be run by donkeys. Demonstrations are still available for visitors to watch one of the resident donkeys at work.
Carisbrooke is a gorgeous village steeped in history and makes a lovely place to rent a self-catering cottage for a holiday in the Isle of Wight. It is close by to one of the largest towns on the island, Newport, and home to the most exciting castle – Carisbrooke, meaning you will be spoilt for choice for things to do.
