Chale - ISLE OF WIGHT

What's around Chale?

Chale is a village and civil parish in the southern part of the Isle of Wight in an area known as the Back of the Wight as it is quite geographically cut-off from other areas of the island. Located on the coast, Chale is home to the parish church of St. Andrew which was founded in 1114, and features stunning stained glass windows and 14th century bells. It is also home to the Chale Abbey Farm which is one of the oldest buildings in existence on the Isle of Wight today.

Chale is larger than the nearby hamlet of Chale Green, but is still quite small and has that community feel, where strangers will smile at you in the street and where you can breathe in the fresh sea air. It is close by to other towns, villages and attractions on the island, meaning you will never be at a loss for what to do. Renting a self-catering cottage in Chale is recommended as it is by the sea, without being located in one of the busier popular beach resorts, meaning you can enjoy a tranquil holiday in a gorgeous setting, with all the amenities you will need.

Places to visit near Chale

The large village of Niton is only 3 kilometres from Chale, and has an array of shops and pubs as well as sprawling views over the rolling hills and lush countryside. St. Catherine’s Lighthouse is one of the popular things to see when in Niton. Visitors can go on a guided tour of the lighthouse to get an insight into the history of this structure which dates from all the way back in 1323. The present structure was constructed in 1838, however, and today guides shipping in the Solent and the English Channel. The lighthouse is a must-see for anyone interested in maritime history.

Also very close by to Chale is the amusement park Blackgang Chine, Britain’s oldest theme park. With rollercoasters, a maze and a Dinosaurland, there is plenty to see and do for the kids and adults alike, and apart from Robin Hill park, it is one of the most exciting family days out for young children on the Isle of Wight.
