Queen Bower

bluebells isle of wight in early MayLocated towards the eastern side of the Isle of Wight, Queen Bower is quite a large village which has combined together with Apse Heath and Winford – other villages which are in very close proximity. The history of the settlement is quite an interesting one, with its name, Queen Bower, said to have been named after either King Edward Longshank’s queen or Isabella de Fortibus, known as the last ‘queen’ of the Isle of Wight, who both owned a hunting lodge in the nearby forests.

Close by to Queen Bower is the gorgeous copse of Borthwood, which is owned by the National Trust. Covering a large portion of the eastern side of the Isle of Wight, this copse includes some medieval forestry, ancient oak and beech trees and winding pathways which the public are fully welcome to stroll through to discover the beautiful range of flora and fauna. With intense bluebells, scuttling dormice and rare red squirrels, a meander through Borthwood Copse is perfect if you enjoy and appreciate nature.

The Queen Bower Dairy Park is a working dairy farm located within the village, where visitors are welcome to have a look around at this family-run establishment. Set in stunning grounds where cows happily graze in fields, the Queen Bower Dairy provides the milk that goes into the famous Isle of Wight Cheese, which you can purchase on a visit to the farm! All in all, it makes a lovely little visit for those who are interested in seeing how a dairy farm works, and is definitely worth the trip.

Queen Bower is only about three miles from the lovely seaside resort of Sandown, which as the name suggests, is home to gorgeous, sandy beaches. Also in Sandown is a pier with a mini fun fair, Dinosaur Isle, which is the first museum devoted to dinosaurs in the United Kingdom! With life-sized reproductions of these giant prehistoric animals, as well as exhibitions and displays, a trip to Dinosaur Isle is both fun and educational, and is fantastic to take the kids to.
