Yaverland  - ISLE OF WIGHT

What's around Yaverland ?

Located near the eastern coast of the Isle of Wight, close to the stunning Culver Down and the popular seaside resort of Sandown, is the village of Yaverland. This small but friendly community consists of a number of housing and cottages, some of which are available to rent for those wishing to have a self-catering holiday on the island. With fossils of a dinosaur, Yaverlandia, that were discovered nearby being named after the village, and a historic manor house which dates back to 1620, Yaverland has an interesting history and is worth visiting or staying in if you want a quieter atmosphere than Sandown.

Much of the village is situated along the eastern coastline of the island, providing stunning views of the sea and the cliffs. Renting a cottage in Yaverland by the sea is a brilliant way to experience this small settlement which has lots of amenities of its own, plus a small community feel to it. The village is home to the Yaverland Sailing and Boat Club which is located by the sea, and there are also guided fossil walks which can be taken from Dinosaur Isle – the UK’s first dinosaur museum – which is along the esplanade in Sandown.

At the time of writing in 2013, the beach had Blue Flag status and is a lovely long sandy beach stretching along the coast to Sandown. It is only the Yaverland section of beach which has the high Blue Flag standards and dogs are not permitted. However, a little further along the beach, dogs are allowed all year round and this is possibly the best pet-friendly seaside holiday location in England. A café and shop, good toilets in the 'pay and display' car park help make this a good family holiday location as well.

isle of wight zooThe Isle of Wight Zoo is located in Yaverland. A brilliant attraction for all the family, the zoo is home to a number of rescued tigers with large enclosures so as to provide them as realistic a settlement as possible. Other animals at the zoo include jaguars, lions, spider monkeys and lemurs, and there is a strong Madagascan theme throughout the reserve. With an Animal Café where visitors to the zoo can watch the animals whilst they eat, a trip to the Isle of Wight Zoo is a must if you are in Yaverland.

Sandown is only one mile down the boardwalk from Yaverland, and there is plenty to do in this old Victorian coastal resort. Besides relaxing on the sandy beaches, visitors can take a trip to Dinosaur Isle, which not only provides the fossil walks in Yaverland, but is a geological centre that features life-sized models of dinosaurs and educational displays on these prehistoric creatures. There is also a brilliant shop with toys and dinosaur models, jewellery and minerals and books on geology, all of which make wonderful gifts and souvenirs for family and friends back at home.
